Architect: Lesko Architecture
Total Project Cost: $32 Million
The school board and community in Wooster Ohio worked together to create something truly spectacular. Completed in 1994, the new state-of-the-art high school is designed to accommodate 1,600 students, and should fulfill every parent and teenager’s dream of the perfect school building. Wooster High School was a $32,000,000 project that consumed 386,000 square feet of audio-visually enhanced, computer networked, up-to-date learning space for education and community events and activities. The Wooster High Generals in grades eight through twelve have every reason to be justifiably proud of their beautiful new public school facility.
The high school building includes a cafeteria with kitchen, library, administrators and counselors offices, and studios for both radio and television production including the control rooms. The architects worked closely with Wooster teachers and school officials to design flexible classroom spaces that can be adapted for use with modern technologies as they become relevant. The school has a gymnasium that seats 2,200 people, a 140 seat multimedia room, and an auditorium that seats 1,000. The complex includes a theater that is professionally designed and equipped with full lighting and stage management systems. The new loading dock can accommodate full sized sets and it has stage side dressing rooms for student performers.
During the mid-point of the construction project, a 55,000 square foot Community Recreation and Fitness Center was added to it through community investment, and now is managed by the local Parks and Recreation Department. The Ellen Shapiro Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-meter pool with eight lanes and related pool facilities and pump/maintenance rooms. The Natatorium was built with a private donation of $2.3 million and is managed by the YMCA. The roof on the entire complex is a single ply roofing system of FiberTite®, which is highly resistant to tearing, weathering and roof-top contaminants/pollutants.
Outdoors, the athletic facilities complete the impressive high school complex. There’s a field house and a 5,000 seat stadium suitable for football or soccer games. The stadium also includes a whole new track for track & field events. Every conceivable facility for a first-class modern high school education has been provided at Wooster High School.
