Changing Needs in
Health Care Construction

Wooster Community Hospital

This is a challenging time for hospitals and other health care institutions. The impact of managed care, changing reimbursement patterns, the growth of home health services and the proliferation of new technology continue to impact the way hospitals use space and serve their clients.

Hospital-based long-term care is on the horizon. Health care providers are being challenged to modify existing facilities and build new facilities to meet the expectations of the health care community. Hospitals must continue to change in order to stay competitive if they are to survive in the new millennium.

The Importance of Experience

An experienced contractor is essential to the success of any hospital building project whether it involves new construction, rehabilitation, or a combination of both. Bogner Construction Company has the experience and the expertise to help your planning team assemble accurate cost projections and schedule improvements to minimize disruption. Bogner understands your special needs. It knows that life support systems must be maintained at all times and that patients and staff members need special consideration.

Wooster Community Hospital

Wooster Community Hospital is a 139 bed full service acute care hospital in Wooster, Ohio, a community of about 26,000 people. It is a good example of how hospital management can combine new construction and rehabilitation effectively to meet changing health care needs.

The hospital was built in the 1940s as a one story structure with two wings, roughly in the shape of a 'U'. It has been modified often in the intervening years and Bogner Construction has been an integral part of those changes.

In 1955, Bogner built a second-floor addition over an existing wing to add a pediatrics unit. Between 1968 and 1971, a multi-phased project was completed that included both new construction and complete rehabilitation of the existing structure. Bogner added a four-story, 100-bed addition complete with new lab, radiology department, surgical suite, intensive care unit, central supply, cafeteria, kitchen, pharmacy, boiler room, and mechanical room.

Upon completion of the first phase, ancillary departments and support services were relocated to the new addition. Once the existing building was empty, Bogner rebuilt the obstetrics department, added a new cardiac care unit, created an emergency room suite from the old surgery, and constructed new administrative offices in the old kitchen. New windows were added and all mechanical and electrical systems were upgraded.

In 1997, the hospital board, now associated with a national hospital management company, chose Bogner as its construction manager for a new $8 million construction renovation project. The 34,000 square-foot project focused on a new $7 million surgical complex with four general surgical suites, an orthopedic surgical suite and sixteen patient rooms dedicated to ambulatory surgery. It also included a $1 million chilled water upgrade for the entire hospital campus, exterior improvement to a former warehouse now used for hospital offices and a parking lot expansion adjacent to the new surgical wing. The project was completed in 1999.

The health care division of Moody-Nolan Ltd., Inc. of Columbus, Ohio served as architect for the project. Scheeser, Buckley, Mayfield, Inc. of Uniontown, Ohio  provided mechanical/electrical engineering services. The project involved creating a new main entrance convenient to the surgical center and an adjacent area for outpatient testing, counseling services and admitting. The goal was to provide easier access to patient services, especially in the area of ambulatory surgery. Once again, with Bogner's help, the hospital is meeting its needs by combining new construction with a more efficient use of existing space.

The Wooster Clinic

Bogner Construction Company has been a part of four major expansion projects at the Wooster Clinic, a multi-specialty group practice that was purchased in 1998 by The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Established as a solo practice in the 1920's, the Wooster Clinic now includes more than thirty physicians in many specialty areas of medicine.

Bogner has been an integral part of the Clinic's growth as the facility has been expanded to create space for additional physicians and provide opportunities for new services. Over the years, using Bogner expertise and personnel, the Clinic has added an in-house radiology department, constructed a three-story office wing for physician suites and re-designed the main entrance, main lobby and administrative area. Bogner handled all the concrete, masonry, structural steel and roofing for the three-story office wing.

Joel Pomerene Hospital

Joel Pomerene Hospital is located in Millersburg, Ohio, and is the center of health care for Holmes County, an area of about 40,000 people. In 1975, hospital management contracted with Bogner Construction for both expansion and total rehabilitation of the existing facility. The work was completed in two phases.

First, a second floor was installed over the existing one-story hospital. Its structural system was suspended from steel girders that completely spanned the facility, making it independent of the first floor. This technique minimized disruption while construction was underway. The second floor was completed and equipped for patients and ancillary services.

Once patients were moved into the new second-floor facility, the entire first floor was renovated to add new surgical suites, a laboratory, kitchen, and other departments. Patient care continued uninterrupted throughout the construction period. The job was complicated by the fact that Joel Pomerene is located on a compact site on the side of a hill and that parking and construction took place in a confined area.
